SUSTAINABILITY SNAPSHOTS
Key Highlights (2025)
100% Renewable Energy Utilization
In 2025, Mapúa University strengthened its commitment to sustainability by partnering with ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions to power its Manila and Makati campuses with 100% renewable energy through the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP). This transition significantly reduced the University’s carbon footprint and contributed to its goal of becoming one of the greenest campuses in the Philippines, with 86.44% of its annual electricity consumption sourced from renewable energy.
94% Reduction in Scope 2 Emissions
The University’s transition to renewable energy in 2025 resulted in a remarkable 94% reduction in Scope 2 GHG emissions, decreasing from 3,301.29 tCO₂e in 2024 to 198.34 tCO₂e in 2025. This demonstrates the significant impact of renewable electricity procurement on reducing the University’s carbon footprint.
2.1% Reduction in Water Consumption
Following the full resumption of on-campus operations, water consumption at Mapúa University increased from 26,059 m³ in 2023 to 35,204 m³ in 2024, reflecting heightened utilization of laboratories, classrooms, and student facilities. In 2025, however, the University successfully reversed this trend, reducing consumption to 34,482 m³, a 2.1% decrease from the previous year. This improvement demonstrates the effectiveness of the University’s water conservation initiatives, including the installation of low-flow fixtures, implementation of water recycling systems, and adoption of rainwater harvesting practices.
100% Hazardous Waste Properly Treated and Disposed
All 3,796.63 kg of hazardous waste generated in 2025 was safely transported and treated by DENR-accredited hazardous waste service providers, ensuring full compliance with environmental regulations and responsible laboratory waste management.
66.8% Waste Diversion Rate Achieved in 2025
In 2025, 66.8% of Mapúa University’s solid waste was diverted from landfill through recycling and composting initiatives, while residual waste sent to landfill decreased by 36.5%, from 28,250.25 kg in 2024 to 17,936.00 kg, demonstrating significant progress in sustainable waste management and resource recovery.
Food Waste Reduced by 13.5% Through Bokashi Composting
In 2025, Mapúa University achieved a 13.5% reduction in food waste generation among all the campuses, decreasing from 10.06 tons in 2024 to 8.70 tons in 2025. Food waste collected by the housekeeping department and canteen concessionaires is processed through the University’s Bokashi composting initiative, which commenced on 7 August 2025. Through this program, food waste is treated using the Bokashi method and subsequently processed by The Soilmate Collective (TSCI) into fertilizer for partner farms. The initiative supports waste diversion, resource recovery, and a circular approach to organic waste management by transforming food waste into a valuable agricultural resource. management. recovery, and circular waste management.
